Tips for getting on the property ladder

Getting a foot on the property ladder in Auckland is a well known hard task these days. But with some hard work and careful planning, it is possible to get a property deal. If you are looking to get on the property ladder there are a few things that might help you.

Four tips to help you get on the property ladder

  1. Look for a slightly cheaper suburb. If you can’t afford to live slap bang in the central city or a close suburb think about moving slightly further afield. Houses in outer suburbs are often cheaper or offer better value for money. Some people have even taken this a step further and moved to other areas like Hamilton in search of more affordable homes. But remember to factor in travel costs if you have to commute to work.
  2. Move in with someone else or offer a rental option. If you have good friends or family also looking to move into their own place, think about sharing the mortgage burden between you. Alternatively, you could think about renting out a spare room to bring in some extra income.
  3. Use your KiwiSaver. If you are buying your first home you may be able to use some of your KiwiSaver funds to help.
  4. Think about buying a doer-upper. Buying a house that involves a bit of work can be an affordable option. If you don’t mind DIY and you can save more by doing the work yourself. A doer-upper is a great way of getting on the property ladder and increasing the value of the property for later resale.

Whatever and wherever in Auckland you are buying, InnoHome can help make sure your purchase is sound

Whatever type of house you are buying –  a budget doer-upper or a high end buy – you need to make sure it is sound before buying. When you are just getting on the property ladder, making sure you have picked a good house is even more important.

A pre-purchase inspection gives you peace of mind that there are no major issues with the home you are buying. And if the inspection does through anything up you can go into negotiations with your eyes open. Not everything is a deal-breaker, so think about your options.

We carry out house inspections across Auckland and can provide you with a verbal report first if you need the information in a hurry.
